Fundamentally identical to BBCode — a very complex language introduced in 1998 that can be used by members of Internet forums to add formatting to their posts. Its syntax is similar to that of the more basic HyperText Markup Language (HTML) that is used to create structure in webpages.
BBCode is converted to HTML behind the scenes before being displayed by the forum software.
