Short for “plutocrat,” i.e. a person whose immense wealth provides them with outsized power within society, both through political and non-political avenues. “Plutes” has gained usage in recent years as the debate over the influence of billionaires has risen to the top of our political discussion, especially on Twitter. Anand Giridharadas, a prominent political commentator and author of the book “Winners Take All” recently used the phrase “Plutes gonna plute” in a livestream for the New York Times.
