It depends how it's used. The Mafia is often assumed to be the italian mafia, but a mafia is any group of people that work together in unpolitical ways.

a word that came out of the arabic language in sicily.mostly consisting in america of half and quater sicilians at the time who were in the mafia. same thing with the famous people who are " sicilian" most of them are half or quarter.

the biggest association in the mob which a lot of people think is cool because they have no one else to idolize even though the mobsters commit horrible crimes.
It now can be used as a synonym for the mob, because you don't even have to be italian to say you're part of a mafia.
