The Portuguese Goodbye refers to a parting of ways that unfolds in stages over tens of minutes, typically involving different people taking turns reviving and extending a conversation that only appears to all non-Portuguese participants as having already reached its natural conclusion.

The way my Portuguese in-laws say goodbye after Sunday dinner typically takes 30 minutes from the first 'we need to go' to the rest of the family encircling their car in the driveway to wave at them while they disappear over the horizon - "the portuguese goodbye" par excellence.

Their approach is focused on uplifting and educating without causing embarrassment or belittlement, emphasizing respect for each individual's unique linguistic journey and encouraging growth in a supportive, non-judgmental manner.

I met a Grammar Swami who patiently and kindly showed me how to use language better, guiding me towards improvement without making me feel embarrassed or small.
