The foamy unappealing top layer of a pie; also known as merIngue. Would beaten, sugary egg whites have become a popular dessert if served solo instead of topping fruity goodness in a pastry shell? Probably not.

I would love to have a piece of lemon meringue pie, but it looks like it's coated in calf slobber.
