obviously, many people call their respective cities "the city" but there is only one CITY: Manhattan.

Brooklyn is not the city, Queens is not the city, the Bronx is not the city & Staten Island is NOT the city.

Only Manhattan is the City.
It is the greatest city on earth.
New York City is the City.

London is an exception, where "the City" (with a capital) is used to refer to a specific area within Central London, also known as the Square Mile. It's the main business district, basically.

US: We're going to the city tonight!
UK: Those damn City workers and their 6 figure salaries.

Nickname for San Francisco. Sometimes also called "San Fran", but the local residents hate it when someone refers to it as "'Frisco". A wonderful city for all, with steep hilly streets, among other things.

Jeremy: Let's check out The City and see Lombard Street. It's the Crookedest Street in the World. After that we can get on a ferry and visit Alcatraz. Then we can have a pizza.
