Originally a mis-hearing of the earthquake-measuring "Richter Scale", this measures how far your jaw drops when told a surprising or shocking fact. Anything above a Rictus Scale of 7 means you look like Jim Carrey waking from a nightmare.

Officially a measurement of the energy released by an earthquake, this is often used as a measurement of anything extreme. Something described as 'Off the Richter' or 'Off the Richter Scale' is particularly dramatic.

Something that is too extreme to be measured. The Richter Scale is officially used for measuring earthquakes; anything above 7 is described as a major quake. Anything "off the Richter Scale" (or "Off the Richter") is therefore an extreme example.
