Of Greco-Roman origin, it was believed that the goddess Tyche/Fortuna would spin the Wheel of Fortune at random, granting some good fortune and others misfortune. The symbol persisted into the Middle Ages, namely with the Carmina Burana, a collection of 24 poems in Latin, Middle High German, and some French vernacular. In 1935-36, German composer Carl Orff set the poems to music as part of his cantata of the same name, which includes the famous "O Fortuna."
