The buttons on a video game controller that indicate direction. Most commonly the directions of Up, Down, Left and Right and usually with support for combinations (e.g. Up-Left, Down-Right, etc).

A term commonly used in wordMUD/words (Multi-User Dungeons) and wordMMORPG/words (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games). Denotes a non-playable character that is generally attackable and often a monster of some kind.
